
Since the creation of this industry in the country, annual growth between 1995 and 2018 in point of the number of funds has been 23.6% CAGR, with 2018 closing with 132 private equity funds created and 122 in operation. The composition by fund type is as follows: acquisition/growth (32.8%), real estate (24.6%), infrastructure (13.1%), entrepreneurship capital (15.6%), impact (11.5%), and natural resources (2.5%).
In 2018, the private equity funds industry (active funds) in Colombia had available equity commitments for USD 5.7 billion and invested equity commitments for USD 10.3 billion.
Capital raising flows
According to LAVCA figures, despite difficulties arising from the Covid 19 pandemics, the raising of equity funds in Latin America increased by 30% in the first half-year of 2020, as compared with the same half-year of 2019.
Venture capital investment was consistent throughout the first half-year of 2020 as the ecosystem matures, with USD 1.2 billion invested in 170 transactions.
Of the investments received in Colombia between 2016 and 2020, 90% of them were for startups originating in Bogota Region. According to Crunchbase, the capital has more than 70 startups with investments exceeding USD 1 million, including those made in Rappi, 1DOC3, Brainz, TPaga, Lentesplus, and MUY.
